Is Rain Network Worth It? | REVIEW

Share:
So a month ago I just subscribed to the Rain Network. Rain is a new South African ISP (Internet Service Provider) which offers data-only 4G/LTE sim cards.

Rain came in just the right time as South Africans were complaining about data prices. It's public knowledge that data in South Africa is ridiculously charged. A Gig is on average R149.

Here are some good things about Rain
  • Rain offers unlimited off-peak hours of data. (23:00-18:00). This means you could access the internet without any limits (of course every company has terms to protect their services) at just R250 P/M.
  • If you want data to use during peak hours, (18:00-23:00),  you will be charged at R50 per Gig, Practically a 5c per MB. Fairly low.
  • Rain data DOES NOT expire!
  • Rain allows you to limit the usage to avoid exorbitant charges.
  • Rain is not a contract; you could cancel anytime and only pay what you used.
  • You buy online. They deliver the sim card straight at your door.
  • You pay only at the end of the month. No more data bundles depleted SMSes.
Some cons I have picked up!
  • Rain only work in cert!ain areas. You need to first check on their map if you are also covered. Likely if you are in Suburbs and Metropolitan areas, you're good to go. If you're at eMakhaya and the rural, the connection might give you some phobias.
  • Their sim cards are only available on 4G/LTE. This means that you will need a router or a device that may be a little bit above your budget. Things are certainly tough in South Africa. 4G phones cost around R3K.
  • Their limit only starts at R250 PM. This means you need to Ref yourself, else your bill will only be limited at R250.00
  • Their connection is good when you are the ONLY user connected. Once you start adding the cousins, girlfriends, and neighbors, you will hate them (Your relatives of course, not Rain).
  • You have to at least set an alarm during peak hours, else you won't be notified. You will only see the charges on your bill,.
Overall, Rain network is reasonable and fairly low. I would give it a 7/10.
